Cheer Up the Lonely Day - July 11, 2021
Cheer Up The Lonely Day is observed around the world every year on July 11th. This year, the occasion is so much more important as we emerge from the covid pandemic and restrictions are finally lifted. While loneliness can affect all age groups and walks of life, it is our parents’ and grandparents’ generations who are at the greatest risk. Loneliness in older people can exacerbate existing health problems and lead to many more. The good news? It can only take a few minutes to make a huge difference!
Even the smallest gesture can have a profound impact on someone living with loneliness. The difference between darkness and light is astounding. Being lonely for long periods of time can feel like being in a very dark room without much ventilation. But when that next interaction with someone finally comes along, it’s like throwing back the curtain on a bright sunny day, instantly flooding the darkness out of the room and replacing it with bright light and fresh air. Human interaction is a vital and necessary element in our lives, one that can instill a lasting brightness especially for someone suffering from chronic loneliness.
Aesop wrote, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."
While visits and outings are surely always preferred, don’t overlook the value of the small token. A quick text message or email can go a long way. Get creative! Bring them a magazine or a yummy treat! When you can spare a little more time, offer to play cards, go for a walk or even watch a movie together.
Cheer Up The Lonely Day was invented by Francis Pesek who wanted a way to show kindness toward others who were lonely or neglected as shut-ins or in nursing homes. He hoped that the annual observance would serve as a reminder that every day is another opportunity to shine some light into someone else’s life.
We here at Daughter for Hire recognize that you can’t always be there for your loved ones. Perhaps there are too many miles between you. Either way, our caregivers are instrumental in reducing loneliness in our clients. If we can help shine some light on someone you care about, please let us know. If you are interested in being the light in somebody else’s life, consider becoming one of our caregivers!
