Seniors Staying in Shape
Aging doesn’t mean getting weaker, or just staying where you are. It’s an opportunity to get stronger - even if it’s for the first time in your life.
Make the most out of your older years. Staying in shape as a senior is just as, if not more important than in your younger years. Working out doesn’t have to be extraneous - making simple adjustments to the activities you’ve always loved can go a long way.
Staying physical has more benefits than what the eyes can see. Reducing the likeliness to fall, preventing memory loss, boosts energy, and weight loss, to name a few. Spending time each day engaging in activity greatly improves your overall quality of life and health. Swimming, dancing, biking, jogging- these are all options! You can even spend just 10 minutes a few times a day gardening, or doing yoga.
Just because you aren’t in your 20’s or 30’s anymore, doesn’t mean you can’t learn new things, or find new hobbies you love.
There are a few things to keep in mind before you hit the road running (or jogging).
- Know your limits and surroundings - don’t push yourself to the point of harm.
- Always warm up, and cool down to reduce muscle soreness or injury.
- Stay hydrated even on the days you aren’t exercising.
Work out with a friend to stay motivated, and set short, and long term goals to keep each other accountable. Don’t feel bad if you have to make adjustments to the workouts you used to be able to do in college. It’s more beneficial to do little exercises than to push yourself too much. However, it is possible to be stronger than when you were younger!
